Police were called to Station Road in Market Bosworth on Thursday after a child was hit by a car.
It happened near St Peter's School. Officers said they were called at 3.16pm to reports of a road traffic collision.
The boy was taken to hospital and his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Leicestershire Police said a 45-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a collision and failing to provide a specimen and remains in custody.
A spokesperson for St Peter’s Market Bosworth Primary School, said: "Yesterday afternoon a pupil was hit by a car outside of our school as children were heading home.
"Firstly, we simply wanted to say thank you. The support that the community showed the child, and each other, was hugely impressive. It was a very nasty incident, witnessed by quite a few pupils and adults, and your help in providing care and reassurance was appreciated.
"Above all else, we are relieved and delighted to say that the child is recovering very well and should be back to school soon.
"That does not, however, mean that we shouldn’t spend time and energy looking at how we best protect our children and do all that we can to stop any such issue happening again in the future. We have already been in contact with the Local Authority to ask for their help in looking at what we can collectively do differently.
"We will also be reiterating the importance of road safety to our children – and are encouraging all families to do the same."
