The trees will be approximately 20cm – 40cm when they are collected.

A scheme has been launched to handout 4,000 trees to residents and community groups across Charnwood.

The borough council has teamed up with its open spaces partner idverde to help make the area a greener place.

Cllr Roy Rollings, said: “I’m delighted to say the Council’s free tree scheme is returning this year! We had a great response to our giveaways in the past, so I would encourage people to apply as soon as possible to snap up their free trees!

“Trees provide a wide range of positive impacts on the environment and our local communities.

“We are proud that Charnwood is part of the National Forest, and we want residents to be able to make our borough even greener by planting a tree in their gardens.”

The Council ran free tree schemes in 2018 and 2019 when a total of 8,000 trees were given away.

Households and community groups are eligible to choose up to two trees and there is a choice of four varieties: crab apple, hazel, rowan and silver birch.

The trees will be approximately 20cm – 40cm when they are collected.

Each resident who applies for a free tree will be given a guide on how to plant and look after them.

Residents who apply for a free tree must be available to collect on either Saturday 3rd December 3 or Sunday 4th December between 10am-2 pm from one of the following locations:

  • Saturday December 3, 10 am-2 pm - Derby Road Playing Fields, Loughborough.

  • Sunday December 4, 10 am-2 pm - Hallam Fields Cricket Pavilion, Birstall
