Children being taken out of school by parents over Covid fears

A letter has been sent out reminding parents that children are required to be in school until the summer holidays.

The letter, which was sent by Jane Moore who is Director of Children and Family Services for the Council, and Director of Public Heath Mike Sandys, attempts to reassure parents that schools are safe.

Unauthorised absences, those not due to COVID-19 (or other illnesses), mean children are not entitled to remote learning.

The letter also adds, 'Most COVID-19 infections are being spread at parties and gatherings in the community rather than at school. The
most effective way to protect your family and community is to exercise caution when organising social events by gathering outside and sticking to the rule of 6 indoors.'

Last week we reported that an average of 2230 children a day have been unable to attend school in June because they have had to self isolate.

This is a small proportion of student's but a significant number nonetheless.

Deborah Taylor, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: “We know that many families are looking forward to the summer holidays starting but we are aware that some have been keeping their children off unnecessarily in advance because they are worried about Covid-19.

“We want to reassure them that schools have been working incredibly hard to remain safe. We know that most Covid-19 infections are being spread outside of school so we really wanted to take the opportunity to remind families to continue to stick to the guidelines when socialising.

“We are conscious that this has been a challenging year for parents and carers, pupils and school staff. Every day of education we can offer is important so we are asking families to bear with us for one more week. You’ve all been amazing and we’d like to thank you for your incredible flexibility, patience and for taking everything in your stride.”

It comes as the government announces changes to how isolation for children will work.
