Bridge Street in Loughborough has been closed for most of the week because of sink hole.
These images taken by Councillor Jewel Miah, Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, show the early stages of the issues before Leicestershire County Council were on site.
In a statement, Leicestershire County Council said it would be a number of days before contractors would be able to repair the road in order for it to reopen.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire County Council said: "We anticipate the next few days while our teams investigate the issue and carry out the necessary repairs. We’re advising motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes wherever possible. Thanks to everyone for their patience while we work to resolve this safely and as quickly as we can."
The diversion route is via Toothill Road, Meadow Lane, A6004 Belton Road, A6 Derby Road.
