Tesco's distribution centre, which has been in Dodwells Road since 1989, will move in September.

Mountpark which is developing a new industrial estate off Dodwells Island has confirmed the news as part of its announcement to upgrade britain's most bashed bridge.

In a statement Mountpark told Fosse 107

“Having committed over £10 million of private investment, Mountpark is the developer of critical infrastructure solutions along the A5 as part of its Mountpark Hinckley development. This investment has been underpinned by sustained technical work and close collaboration with National Highways, Network Rail and the county highway authorities of Leicestershire and Warwickshire."

“A building contract has been signed and contractor appointed with preparatory works scheduled to commence from early May, as agreed with National Highways. A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order has been published today by National Highways to enable access onto their network and facilitate delivery of the works."

“The schedule of works includes delivery of the new signal-controlled site access, upgrades to Dodwells Roundabout, enhanced pedestrian and cycle connectivity, and the lowering of the A5 carriageway beneath the railway bridge. By addressing this long standing bottleneck, Mountpark will deliver lasting improvements to safety, reducing disruption and improve reliability for the local community and the wider road network."

“In relation to the recent planning application submitted, this seeks to allow Tesco, the occupier of Unit 1 at Mountpark Hinckley, to continue progressing towards its occupation from September 2026 whilst working around the sequencing of the highway works. "

“Tesco are an established business within Hinckley, having operated from its existing Dodwells Road distribution facility since 1989.  Its move to Unit 1 represents a relocation of existing operations, critical to serving around 260 stores across the Midlands, the local consumer population and supporting more than 700 local jobs. Once Tesco relocates, the existing Dodwells Road facility will become vacant. As a result, there will be no material increase in traffic flows on the local road network in the short term. Tesco’s existing operations are currently not impacted by the low railway bridge on the A5, meaning there is no increased risk of bridge strikes arising from the phased occupation."

“The planning application retains our unequivocal commitment towards delivering the highways improvements works. For the most up to date information on traffic management measures including road closures and diversion routes, members of the public are recommended to refer to National Highways and local authority websites and public channels. Timely updates will be published as the phased works are implemented.”

Tom Kilmister, Senior Development Director, UK & Ireland, Mountpark
