A much-loved business in Hinckley is celebrating a major milestone this year, as Hinckley Shoe Repairs turns 80.
The town centre shop, which first opened its doors on Regent Street on 5th April 1946, has become a familiar and trusted name for generations of local people. Known for its dependable service and friendly atmosphere, it’s a place many residents have relied on for decades.
Current owner Steve, who has worked at the shop for an incredible 52 years, says it’s the people of Hinckley who have kept him going.
“The customers – I have fantastic, loyal customers,” he said.
The business was originally founded by Tommy Lewis, who employed three members of staff, including Steve’s father, Frank.
Over time, Frank became a partner before eventually taking over the business himself, with support from family members including Steve’s uncle Sid. That strong family connection has continued through the years. Steve’s brother, Mark Lavender, also played a key role, working alongside him for more than four decades. Together, their dedication has helped build the shop’s reputation for quality workmanship and reliability.
Customers clearly value the service. One long-standing visitor summed it up simply: “You’ve always got what I want.”
While shoe repairs remain at the core of the business, the shop has adapted over the years to meet customers’ needs. It also offers handbag repairs, key cutting, and a range of accessories such as laces, shoe polish and leather goods – all with work carried out on site.
As the shop celebrates its 80th anniversary, Steve has signed a new five-year lease, meaning Hinckley Shoe Repairs will continue to serve the town well into the future.
