"One of our own has given their life in service of our country, and it is only right that we mark that sacrifice for generations to come."

A Nuneaton soldier who was killed in Afghanistan is to be honoured by having a street named after him.

Fusilier Louis Carter died in 2009 aged 18 while trying to save a comrade in Helmand Province.

He was a former pupil of Our Lady of the Angels Junior School and St Thomas More School before enrolling in an army training course at Hinckley College.

The named road of Clinic Drive will be renamed Fusilier Louis Carter Drive.

The play area in Riversley Park is already named after Royal Fusilier Carter, and now part of the nearby road will also carry his name.

Cllr Kris Wilson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: “Our Borough has always had a very special relationship with our Armed Forces. This is yet another way we honour the covenant between us.

“One of our own has given their life in service of our country, and it is only right that we mark that sacrifice for generations to come.

“Fusilier Louis Carter demonstrated the highest ideals of bravery, duty, and honour.

“With the renaming of Clinic Drive he will now forever be part of our Remembrance Day service, with the parade and ex-servicemen all marching into Fusilier Louis Carter Drive.”

It is hoped that the road will be renamed before D-Day on 6 June, because every year, members of the Fusiliers Association, Nuneaton and Bedworth branch, hosts a service at its memorial in the park on that day.

Last year, a stretch of Rye Piece Ringway in Bedworth was renamed Sergeant Simon Valentine Way in honour of the town’s soldier, who died in Afghanistan in 2009.
