Four vehicles were seized by police.

Leicestershire Police have stopped 10 motorists in Loughborough as part of a campaign to tackle uninsured drivers.

Operation Tutelage is a national initiative to remove uninsured vehicles from the country’s roads. Phase one involved writing to 915 motorists in the force area between December 2017 and April 2018 who were identified as having been driven without insurance. The letter encouraged them to check their policy was correct and up-to-date and warned them to renew their policy if necessary.

All of the vehicles were checked again after 28 days and those who still don’t have valid insurance face prosecution.

80% of those people who were written to had insured their vehicle.

Phase two involved enforcement and on Thursday 10th May officers were in Loughborough pulling over motorists who had been identified as having no insurance. Three hours of action ended with the following results.

  • Vehicles Stopped -10
  • Vehicles seized for having no insurance – 4
  • Vehicles with no tax – 3
  • Arrests – A 30 year old man was arrested on suspicion of being an immigration over stayer and is being dealt with by the UK Border Agency
  • Traffic Offence Reports (TOR) issued for MOT/seatbelt offences – 3
  • Drivers without a license or using a provisional license – 2
  • Her Majesty’s Court and Tribunal Service recovered an unpaid fine of £160 which had been outstanding for three years.

PC Tony Bunker from the Tactical Roads Policing Team said; “It is vital that we reduce the number of uninsured vehicles on the roads. We know that uninsured vehicles account for a proportionately higher number of collisions, and are more likely to be linked with ‘fatal four’ offences, such as drink and drug driving and driving without a seatbelt or on a mobile phone. Uninsured vehicles also create a cost burden to those who buy insurance with an estimated £15 from each private car policy being used to pay for uninsured losses each year.”
