The council say that parking in the area will be increased along with new seating, cycle parking facilities and trees.

Charnwood Borough Council has announced that work is starting on Shepshed Market Place this month.

They will be creating a more open and pedestrian-friendly space while increasing parking in the area for shoppers.

Cllr Jewel Miah, Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, said: “I am delighted that we can get this project underway as it will make this area of Shepshed much more attractive for people.

“These improvements have been drawn up in partnership with the town council and town team in consultation with local businesses and residents. It has long been established that improvements are needed to encourage people to visit the area and that means it needs to be an attractive environment.

“This will also make it a better place for residents and with the reduced speed limit and moving of the pedestrian crossing, it also makes it safer."

These are the proposed improvements to Market Place:

  • A larger pedestrianised area in front of the shops on the corner of Brook Street and Church Street.
  • The pedestrianised area will also be a place to host small-scale events and market stalls. Pavements will be improved and widened in Market Place and along Brook Street.
  • Pedestrian safety will be improved by realigning Brook Street and creating a new 20mph zone. The existing pedestrian crossing will be moved slightly to make it safer to use.
  • Parking in the area will be increased and new seating, cycle parking facilities and trees and planting will also be added.

Cllr Jewel Miah, said: “It does mean there will be some disruption while construction takes place, but we have been working hard to minimise any impact on local businesses and residents. We will be keeping them up to date about the works and respond swiftly to any concerns.”

The improvements to Market Place have been funded by Charnwood Borough Council and grants from the LLEP and from the Future Charnwood Investment Plan which is a series of projects being supported by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The total cost of the scheme is around £2.5m for the Market Place scheme.

The improvements are the first phase of a wider scheme which would see improvements made to Hall Croft and the Bull Ring in Shepshed. These later phases could be carried out later this year, but detailed plans are currently being developed.
