County Councillors to hear the impact in Leicestershire of the proposed HS2 rail link.

County councillors will be given the latest insight next week on how preparations are being made to influence the impact in Leicestershire of the proposed HS2 rail link.

At a meeting of the Scrutiny Commission on Monday, 27th January, the need to petition central Government to ensure the right outcome for Leicestershire will be outlined, while members will also be made aware of the hybrid Bill process.

The report also underlines the benefits of pro-actively engaging with HS2 on many issues including aspirations to:

  • Develop opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses in Leicestershire to win HS2-related contracts;
  • Work with ecological and environmental partners to enhance the natural environment and minimise impacts of climate change;
  • Avoid the HS2 proposed 12-month long road closures on key county roads, and seek adequate advance notification of disruptive work;
  • Seek a classic compatible connection of the Midland Mainline at the proposed high-speed rail station at Toton, giving more journey choices for Leicestershire residents and businesses;
  • Continue to make the case for full electrification of the Midland Mainline;
  • Seek infrastructure investment in the Ivanhoe Line to help clear the way for possible future permanent use that could help bring back passenger services;

We’re committed to playing a full and proactive role when it comes to mitigating the impact of the high-speed rail line. We need to be prepared for significant disruption when the work begins.

Our local knowledge and expertise will help to inform and influence  HS2’s  design  as we look to significantly reduce the impact of the work on our county residents
