The youth workers are part of Young Leicestershire, who already work with a number of other town and parish councils.

Parish Councillors in Barwell have agreed to fund youth workers to provide activities during the Summer and to help and support young people who spend time in parks and on the streets over a number of months.

The money will fund two youth workers for a set number of weeks.

The youth workers are part of Young Leicestershire, which empowers young people to achieve their full potential by leading and supporting voluntary sector youth services in Leicestershire.

They already support the youth work of a number of other parish and town councils in the county.

Parish Council Vice Chair Councillor Mathew Hulbert says, “I’m delighted that there was support from across the Council for this initiative.

“Youth work is important not just as a way to help tackle anti-social behaviour, but also as a way of engaging with young people, meeting them where they are at, helping them deal with any concerns or issues they may have, and helping them achieve their full potential.

“As the Councillor who has championed this project, I very much look forward to encouraging it moving forward and seeing the positive results which I’m sure will flow from it.”

Councillor Hulbert told Fosse 107 there is scope for the funding to be renewed next year if things go to plan.

Alison Jolley, from Young Leicestershire, said “We are delighted to be supporting young people in Barwell and working in partnership with another parish council. Youth work is such an important service to young people and gives them a voice in their community. Our thanks go out to Cllr Hulbert for his drive to make sure this project goes ahead and we look forward to reporting on our progress.”
