Leicestershire Police has said that the collision took place just after 12 pm (23 September) and involved a blue BMW 5 Series and a red Ford Mondeo.
The BMW collided with the Mondeo before leaving the carriageway and hitting a tree.
No one from the Mondeo was injured.
The BMW driver has been taken to hospital and is undergoing treatment for injuries.
Enquiries at the scene are ongoing, and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

The southbound carriageway has been reopened.
The northbound remains closed.
