Councillor David Snartt and Mrs Joan Snartt, the Mayor and Mayoress, met Olympic Gold Medal winner Adam Peaty on their first face-to-face visit since taking up office.
Adam trains at Loughborough University and is coached by Mel Marshall. As with many other members of Team GB, Adam has had to make alternative training arrangements during lockdown.
The Mayor and Mayoress visited the University campus to welcome Adam back to the swimming pool, which is now open for Loughborough’s international athletes to resume training in the run-up to the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year.
In welcoming the Mayor and Mayoress, Professor Bob Allison, the University Vice-Chancellor commented: "I am delighted that we have been able to host David and Joan Snartt at the University. In normal circumstances this would have been graduation week and the Mayor and Mayoress would have been amongst our VIP guests. To have them visit the University today has added significance. The Snartts are long-standing members of the Loughborough family and they will always be welcome here."
Councillor David Snartt, Mayor of Charnwood commented: "The Mayoress and I are always pleased to visit the University. Loughborough is the top university in the world for sport and to meet Olympian Adam Peaty and his coach Mel Marshall made it a special occasion for both of us. Our best wishes are with Adam and all other Loughborough athletes in the run-up to the Olympic games next year. Good luck!"
