New cameras to tackle speeding in communities

New average speed cameras are being installed this summer as part of a scheme to alleviate safety concerns across the county.

The new devices are being installed in Sharnford, Walcote, Oadby, Groby, Measham, Woodhouse Eaves and Wyfordby as part of a year-long trial to discourage motorists from speeding.

The speed cameras - set to be switched on this September - will cover four villages and three key main and rural routes which have various issues and concerns around speeding and safety.

I’m delighted that we’re trialling the average speed enforcement, as we have a commitment to working to make our roads as safe as they can be.

There are communities across the county whose lives are blighted by the effects of speeding motorists. We have listened to what people have been telling us about the problem.

Hopefully the scheme will address the concerns of residents and make a positive change to drivers’ behaviour.

The 12-month trial and enforcement costs around £500,000.

The locations of the speed cameras will be:

  • B4114 Coventry Road and Leicester Road, Sharnford;
  • A4303 Lutterworth Road, Walcote;
  • A6 Harborough Road and Glen Road, Oadby;
  • A50 Leicester Road, Markfield Road, Bradgate Hill, Groby;
  • Burton Road, Measham;
  • Beacon Road, Woodhouse Eaves; and
  • B676 Saxby Road, Wyfordby, Freeby.

The council have apprently asked the Government to consider allowing councils to keep some of the camera fines - this could be used to roll out this type of enforcement across the county.
