North Warwickshire and South Leicester College have signed up more than sixty people to help carry out COVID-19 tests at their campuses across the county.

Following the announcement by the government that all schools and colleges are required to offer tests for COVID-19, North Warwickshire and South Leicester College launched an appeal for volunteers to help with the rollout of the coronavirus testing for their students and staff.

Volunteers are needed for roles such as test assistants, processors, registration assistants and results recorders at the campuses across Hinckley and Nuneaton. So far they have had 60 external volunteers step up to help with the scheme.

Thousands of students have been transferred to online learning through mirror teaching whereby students can access taught sessions through their electronics at home. However, campuses are remaining open for vulnerable students and children of key workers. Whilst they are at home learning, volunteers have been successfully testing at their Nuneaton and Wigston campus with the Hinckley campus coming soon.

Nicola Morrison, Director of Human Resources, Organisation Development and Marketing said, “Although it’s been a complex and demanding task, operations are now running smoothly and we’re confident that the testing process will help us to prevent any cases of asymptomatic Covid-19 spreading across the college.”

Other measures and precautions have been put in place for when hopefully students do return to college. Some of these include, floor markings, one-way systems, and promoting social distancing by setting the classrooms up to enable students to keep 2 metres apart. As well as this, hand sanitizers and additional cleaning supplies have been kept up to date to help stop the spread of the virus.

Nicola assured us that, “The health and safety of our students and our staff is of most importance to us at the moment.”
