Over £100k secured to make Hinckley's streets safer

The town centre will benefit from £108,000 of funding following a successful bid to the Home Office’s Safer Streets Fund.

Secured in conjunction with the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police Commission (PCC) the Hinckley and Bosworth Community Safety

Partnership will use the funding to complete a range of safety projects to prevent theft, burglary and robbery in the Hinckley town centre area.

Initiatives will include introducing more CCTV cameras to enhance coverage of the town in key areas and installing new automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras.

Earlier in June the council installed more cameras, taking the town's total to 28.

It will also provide additional radios for the radio link scheme managed via the Business Improvement District (BID) which links up businesses, Police and CCTV to ensure timely responses to incidences and increases the chances of evidence gathering and prosecution. 

Also qualifying households will be offered free security upgrades to help make their homes inaccessible to criminals and funding will also be dedicated to removing graffiti.

A total of 40 areas across England and Wales have been chosen to receive grants to tackle neighbourhood crime and clamp down on burglary, robbery and vehicle theft.

Executive Member for Community Safety at the Borough Council Cllr Michael Mullaney, joint chair of the Blaby and Hinckley and Bosworth Community Safety Partnership said, “Securing this funding is a welcome boost to tackling neighbourhood crime in Hinckley town centre and will reinforce the investment the Council has made to improve community safety in recent years.

“This funding will go towards a host of crime prevention measures including the installation of new and upgraded CCTV and make a difference to our residents and wider communities.

"The improvements have been based on data and consultation with local communities and we will now work hard to ensure the improvements are implemented by March 2022.  We look forward to updating communities further as the improvements progress.”
