Figures show that 92.9% of youngsters in Leicestershire have secured a place at their first-choice school.

Today thousands of families across Leicestershire and Warwickshire are finding out which primary school their child will be going to in September.

Leicestershire County Council received 7,410 applications this year and 97.9% of children have been offered a place at one of their top three school choices.

Councillor Deborah Taylor, deputy leader and cabinet member for children and families at Leicestershire County Council, said: “We are delighted that the vast majority of children in Leicestershire have been offered a place at one of their top primary schools – and that so many were given their first choice.

“While this is really positive, we also recognise that not every pupil has secured one of the places they had hoped for and we would encourage families needing advice to get in touch as soon as possible to discuss what options may be available to them, including how to make an appeal."

In Leicestershire, figures show that 92.9% of youngsters have secured a place at their first-choice school with 4.06% being offered their second option and just under one per cent their third.

2% (153) did not secure one of their choices and will need to take up a place at an alternative school or they can appeal.

And in Warwickshire, 90% of children starting school in Reception were offered their first choice of school and a further 7% have been offered a place at either their second or third choice school. This means a total of 97% of children have been offered a place at one of their top three schools, with the remaining 3% offered alternative places.

In Warwickshire, families also had to apply for a Junior school place for their children, out of these 97% have been offered a place at their first-choice school.

Councillor Izzi Seccombe, Leader at Warwickshire County Council said: “Starting school for the first time, or moving into Junior School, are such exciting moments for the parents and carers as well as the children themselves. We’re delighted that so many children have secured places at their first-choice school and wish them many happy years of learning in Warwickshire schools.”
