For 20 years the Churches Together in Hinckley and District have been running a project at Christmas, AlterNativity, to try to get us all to think differently about how we shop and for whom.
Mark Rowley from the Breakfast Show talked to Fr Frank Daly, Parish Priest of St Peter's Hinckley to find out more about this year's event which is happening on Saturday the 9th November, full details below.
AlterNativity involves inviting 20 local and international charities to come to an event and offer a ‘gift’ which we can purchase for someone we love, and then give it, in their name in a card, to someone who really needs it. This ‘alternative’ way of ‘doing Christmas’ has now become very popular, especially among those who have begun to feel uneasy at the amount of gifts they are given while at the same time knowing that there are countless people here and all over the world who would dearly love to have them instead. A Christmas card with a leaflet telling you what gift has been given and to whom can often be the cause of great delight for the recipient and the person who realises what those gifts can mean for them.
Do come and join us on the day or via our mail order facility and experience the true joy of this time of year even in the midst of so much suffering, warfare and climate change disasters still happening all around us.
The AlterNativity event takes place in the Mary Forryan Centre, St.Peter’s Church, Leicester Road, Hinckley LE10 1LW on Saturday November 9 from 10.00am-2.00pm, and there is a mail order service available until December 8 by contacting hinckleypriory@gmail.com or Tel.01455 634443.
