The council are now considering installing CCTV at the cemetery.
Charnwood Borough Council has issued a statement after a number of benches at Loughborough Cemetery have been vandalised.
The benches which are dedicated in memory of loved ones were damaged overnight on Monday.
The incident has been reported to the police for officers to investigate.
The statement from Charnwood Borough Council said: "We are appalled by and condemn this callous act of vandalism in a place where people come to grieve and pay their respect to loved ones.
"We will also investigate all measures to make the cemetery site more secure. However, options such as introducing CCTV will take time and require funding. We will also need to give consideration to its need and how it is used."
The council are now contacting the families affected and will work with them to look into 'repairing the benches or helping them with finding replacements'.
