Groups and projects in Charnwood are being urged to sign up for a new community lottery which will raise thousands of pounds for good causes.

The borough council will launch the Charnwood Community Lottery in September and is encouraging organisations & people to register their interest now.

Two information sessions are being held on Thursday August 2 at John Storer House in Loughborough.

Cllr Deborah Taylor, lead member for communities, safety and wellbeing, said: “We are introducing the Charnwood Community Lottery to provide more support to the community and voluntary sector in the borough.

“The lottery is a simple and effective way of helping groups raise much-needed funding. People buying tickets will be able to choose a specific cause to help or have their contribution put into a general pot to help other good causes.

“We already provide around £400,000 to the sector and this is another way to support them.

“The information sessions are a chance to find out more about the lottery.”

Some organisations are already showing interest.

Lorna Hughes, hub co-ordinator at the Marios Tinenti Centre in Loughborough, said: “We are going to sign up to the Charnwood Community Lottery to help us continue our work in one of Loughborough’s most deprived areas.

“The money raised through the lottery will help to support our gardening group and run different activities to bring local people together.”

When the lottery launches, tickets will be sold online and cost £1. For every ticket sold, 60p will go to a good cause. People will be able to choose to support a good cause which has signed up to be involved or for their donation to go into the general pot which the Council will use for community grants.

The information sessions on August 2 will start at 3pm and 4pm. People attending will be able to talk to council officers and representatives from Gatherwell, the company which provides the platform the lottery operates on. Gatherwell works on community lotteries with a number of other authorities.
