Emergency services responded to a serious bungalow fire in Witherley during the early hours of this morning (28 May) after the property was reportedly struck by lightning.
At approximately 3:45 AM, crews from Nuneaton’s White Watch, Polesworth, and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to the incident in Orchard Close in Witherley, Leicestershire, which was initially reported as involving people trapped inside.
Upon arrival, firefighters quickly confirmed that all occupants had managed to evacuate the properties safely before crews entered the scene.
Firefighters said they entered the bungalow to gain access to the roof space, in an attempt to contain the rapidly spreading blaze. However, due to the intensity of the fire and flames breaking through the roof structure, crews were forced to withdraw from the building for safety reasons.
Crews said they successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to an adjacent bungalow, limiting further damage and ensuring nearby residents remained safe.
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service crews remained at the scene throughout the morning to damp down hotspots and monitor the affected area.
The incident has led to Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service re-issuing safety information in the event of a fire.
Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to take simple but vital precautions to improve safety at home:
- Keep escape routes clear at all times, ensuring hallways, stairways, and exits remain free from clutter.
- Store door and window keys in a designated, easily accessible location near exits.
- Make sure every member of the household knows the quickest way to escape in an emergency.
- Regularly check smoke alarms to ensure they are working correctly.
