Shepshed property served with a closure order after drug-related anti-social behaviour reported

The closure order will remain in place until December.

Charnwood Borough Council secured the order on the council property in St James Road,  which means no-one, including the council tenant, can enter the property for three months.

Closure orders aim to protect the residents living in the neighbourhood by stopping anti-social behaviour which has been taking place in or around a property.

The Council worked with Leicestershire Police to gather the evidence needed to obtain the closure order at Leicester Magistrates Court.

The Court was informed the Council had received reports of drug use and noise nuisance at the property and there had been complaints of visitors arriving and leaving the property throughout the night, causing a disturbance at the address.

Visitors to the property had also approached residents in the area while intoxicated leaving them feeling intimidated.

Tenants living in council properties are responsible for both their own behaviour and the behaviour of those visiting the property.

If serious nuisance is caused to local residents, closure orders can be used to prevent people entering the premises and stop the anti-social behaviour. If anyone breaches the order and enters the property, they can be fined or face a prison sentence, depending upon the circumstances.

Cllr Colin Hamilton, the Council’s lead member for housing said: “The behaviour connected with this property was completely unacceptable. We have a responsibility to protect our residents and local communities and this closure order means the disruption has been bought to an end.

“I would like to thank colleagues at Leicestershire Police for helping Council officers gather the evidence needed to secure the closure order.

“If people have concerns about anti-social behaviour in their local area, I encourage them to report it to us so we can investigate.”

The closure order will remain in place until December 27, 2023
