Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council have scooped a top award at this year’s FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) Local Authority Awards.

The Council’s ‘Think Local First’ campaign caught the eye of the judges who were impressed with the creative approach, the practical steps to boost the local economy and, in particular, the opportunities presented for SME’s (Small & Medium Sized Enterprises).

Collecting the award at the annual awards ceremony on 13 July, Cllr Dennis Harvey, Leader of the Council said:

“It’s great to be recognised for our work in supporting local business. This is the fourth year we’ve won an award within the FSB’s ‘small business friendly’ category, showing our commitment in this area.

“Nuneaton and Bedworth is a great place to do business and is home to some excellent, innovative small businesses alongside major national and international businesses. Our Borough is well connected in every way, enjoying a superb location within the UK with excellent transport links. As a Council we do all we can to support existing businesses and attract new companies, large and small. I hope that this latest award demonstrates our continued commitment.

“We have a fantastic track record of supporting small businesses; they are so important to the economy of the Borough, not just in terms of growth, but also for job retention and creation.”

In recent years the Council has been commended for its procurement and regulatory policies, both of which help small businesses to flourish. The Think Local First campaign builds on these achievements, further developing the Council’s own good practice and also reaching out to businesses across the Borough.

Cllr Harvey explained:

“Fundamentally, our Think Local First campaign encourages people to consider using local suppliers, to look at local options when making a purchasing decision – that goes for everyone in the Borough, the Council, residents and businesses alike.

“Our Campaign supports small businesses by boosting the amount of local retail and commercial spend, keeping more money within the local supply chain and local economy.”
