A man reportedly picked up the boy in Charteris Close.
According to a post on the Spotted Loughborough Facebook page, a man was 'hanging around' the Charteris/Gallico Close area of the town this morning, before he tried to take the small boy.
Witnesses said a 'young gentleman' shouted at the man before he put the boy down and ran towards the nearby Morrisons supermarket.
The post has over 400 shares on Facebook.
A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said, "Around 11.50am on Tuesday 22 June officers received a report that a man was behaving suspiciously in Loughborough.
"It was reported that the man picked up a child on Charteris Close before another man nearby shouted and the man put the child down and ran away.
"Officers attended the scene and enquiries are ongoing."
