An end of term blitz of student areas in Loughborough has resulted in 23 tonnes of rubbish collected.

Charnwood Borough Council and waste management partner, Serco joined forces with Loughborough University on Saturday, June 17 to organise the big clear-up in the student areas, including Kingfisher Way and Storer Road.

The blitz saw items such as cardboard boxes, furniture and bedding left out for collection.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, Lead Member for Open Spaces and Leisure Services said: “I’d like to thank everyone who took part in this year’s end of term blitz.

“We’ve had another great result with the help of the students, Serco and the University which will help ensure the town is left tidy before the summer holidays.

“I’m pleased the clean-up continues to make a difference every year as we’re committed to keeping the borough clean and tidy all year round.”

Of the 23 tonnes collected, 16 tonnes were recyclable and were sent to the recycling centre for sorting. This year the Council has also teamed up with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to take part in its Pack for Good campaign.

The campaign encourages students to recycle unwanted clothes, books, electrical items and more which are too large to go in their green recycling bin.

The recycling banks will be in place until the end of September, 2017 so anyone can use them. There are also a number of other recycling banks around the borough.

Around 2,000 student properties were targeted during the event.

The event is held annually and coincides with the end of the academic year.
