Ellis Tearoom Rothley Train Station to close
The Ellis Tearooms at Rothley Train Station will be closing down.
Visitors say they're very upset about the decision
A statement from The Great Central Railway says -
We understand that the closure of Ellis Tea Room has been upsetting news for some customers and for those who work there. We are saddened that, despite everyone’s best efforts over the past few months, we have had to make this difficult decision.
For the past two years, Ellis Tea Room has operated at a consistent loss and has required ongoing subsidy from other parts of the Railway. As a not-for-profit heritage organisation, we have a responsibility to protect the long-term future of the Railway as a whole. That means, at times, making tough decisions to preserve our heritage and ensure the Railway remains sustainable for generations to come.
The Tea Room will close on 15 February. We have been consulting closely with staff affected and are supporting them through this process, including exploring suitable alternative roles within the organisation. While it would be inappropriate to discuss individual circumstances, we are going beyond all statutory and contractual guidelines.
