Man dead in M69 crash

The driver of a recovery vehicle died in the crash this morning at 10am near junction 1 for Burbage on the northbound carriageway. The road has fully reopened.

A man has died after a crash on the M69 near Hinckley this morning. 

It happened at around 10am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 1 for the A5 at Burbage and junction 2 for Sapcote and involved three vehicles, a breakdown recovery truck, a black BMW 1 Series, and a white Transit van.

The driver of the recovery vehicle, a 42-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van sustained serious injuries and was taken to the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire where he remains in a stable condition.

The driver of the BMW was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary with minor injuries.

The motorway was closed in both directions for several hours to allow officers to carry out an investigation of the scene and to enable for the recovery of the vehicles. The southbound carriageway has since been reopened. Northbound is partially open and it is expected to be fully passable shortly.

Detective Sergeant Mark Watling from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit is appealing for anyone who saw any of the vehicles being driven beforehand or the collision itself to get in touch.

He said: “If you saw anything that you believe could assist with our enquiries and you have not yet spoken to police we’d like to hear from you.

“If you were travelling along the M69 in either direction and have information or dashcam footage capturing the collision please call us.
