National Highways says the M1 is closed southbound between J22 (Markfield) and J21A (Leicester).
Detectives are investigating the death of a man on the M1 motorway in Leicestershire this morning.
Police received a call shortly before 3.20 am today (Friday 22 March) to a report of a collision involving a pedestrian and a HGV on the southbound carriageway of the M1 – close to junction 22.
East Midlands Ambulance Service also attended and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
National Highways says the M1 is closed southbound between J22 (Markfield) and J21A (Leicester). Northbound has re-opened however long delays remain in the area. The southbound closure is expected to be in place throughout the rest of the morning.
Officers want to speak to anyone who may have seen the man standing over the bridge or witnessed the incident. Anyone who was driving past junction 22 of the M1 is also asked to check their dash cam for any footage that may assist with the investigation.
Police say that it was also reported that prior to the collision the man was on the bridge in Forest Road and Stoney Lane, Markfield.
